4,000 Journals on the Diamond Discovery Hub: A significant milestone for community-owned publishing

The Diamond Discovery Hub (DDH) has just achieved an exciting milestone: on 9th July it crossed the threshold of 4,000 verified fully Diamond Open Access (OA) journals, and there are now over 4000 verified Diamond OA journals indexed on the platform. All these journals meet the six criteria for Diamond Open Access journals that were developed by the Diamond OA community. 

This achievement reflects the growing importance and dedication of this engaged community, in building and maintaining community owned services and resources keeping access to research and knowledge open for all, without fees for authors or readers.

Our year in numbers

The DDH was launched as part of the CRAFT-OA project in 2025 and is now one of the six key services of the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH). It is a dynamic data collection, growing over time. In 2025, 2947 journals were first indexed in the DDH, and the numbers have been steadily increasing ever since taking us to 4,000 journals today, delivered by over ninety trusted sources.

Through the DDH, Publishing and Institutional Service Providers can support their journals by getting their data aligned, improved and harmonised for broader dissemination. Reader & authors, Research Performing Organisations can assess the nature of Diamond OA journals and their publishers. Funders can assess if a journal qualifies as a community-owned or scholar-led journal. Aggregators can reuse the index, retrieving Diamond OA journal metadata compliant with their requirements.

Why discoverability matters

The Diamond OA landscape is often fragmented, underfunded, and not always technically proficient enough to realise its full potential for science and society. This is why services like the DDH can play a major role in making it easier to find, explore and learn about Diamond OA journals. 

By providing an authoritative list of Diamond OA journals the DDH contributes to the discoverability, visibility and recognition of these publication venues, supports collaboration across the many different actors of Diamond OA and contributes to a more transparent and sustainable scholarly publishing ecosystem.

As the person in charge for onboarding our DDH trusted sources I communicate closely with small or large publishing services. I find it inspiring and rewarding to see how much care and engagement flows into DOA journals and that all these trusted sources went through the efforts of registering and verifying their journals.”

Looking Ahead

The DDH is steadily growing into a trusted and valued partner for Diamond OA journals. In the coming months, it will seek out to further encourage Diamond OA journals, especially from underrepresented eligible regions to register and expand its reach and coverage. 

Via the AEGIS-OA (Activate European Guidance and Incentives for Sustainable Open Access publishing) project it will also enhance and upgrade its scope and services particularly via providing ready to use tools, including an EDCH-aligned OJS package.
